European Geoeconomics Workshop at University of Amsterdam

University of Amsterdam, Roeterseiland Campus entrance

On October 14, I took part in the workshop “European Geoeconomics: The Political Economy of Geopolitics in Europe” of the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES) at the University of Amsterdam, where Wolfgang Wagner and I presented our paper “Public Opinion, Party Politics, and Military Support for Ukraine: Voter-Party Congruence and Vote Switching”. The paper combines a YouGov survey in twelve EU countries with party positions from the special edition of the Chapel Hill Expert Survey on Ukraine. We examine how closely parties’ positions on sending weapons to Ukraine match the views of their voters, and whether gaps between voters and parties go together with intentions to switch parties. The survey was conducted under the NEST project (“Navigating the Storm: European Political Contestation in Geopolitical Transformation”), where I am involved as Co-Investigator, together with my VU colleagues Chendi Wang (PI), Ben Crum, and Wolfgang Wagner. Many thanks to Brian Burgoon and Nena Oana for organizing the workshop and inviting us to present, and to all participants for their helpful comments and questions!
