Service to the profession
My service to the profession spans international associations, editorial boards, and scholarly networks. I serve on the editorial boards of International Studies Quarterly (since 2024), Foreign Policy Analysis (since 2018), and Contemporary Security Policy (since 2018). Within the International Studies Association, I have chaired the Committee on Dissertation Completion Fellowships, which I joined as a member in 2024, for the 2025 to 2026 term, and I previously served on the executive committee of the Foreign Policy Analysis Section from 2017 to 2018. In the German Political Science Association (DVPW), I am an elected member of the Ethics Committee for the 2022 to 2027 term and earlier served as co-speaker of the Foreign and Security Policy Group from 2017 to 2023. In research methods, I am a founding member of the Methods Excellence Network (MethodsNET) and I am on the advisory board of COMPASSS, the network for comparative methods for systematic cross-case analysis, which I joined in 2016.
University roles
At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, I co-direct the interdisciplinary master’s program in Law and Politics of International Security (LLM) and chair the Program Committee for the Bachelor in Political Science, on which I have served since 2023. From 2024 to 2026, I served on the faculty taskforce concerned with program committees. In addition, I help organize regular meetings on defence-related research at the Political Science and Public Administration department, and I have previously co-organized the research seminar for junior staff.
Reviewing
I am a regular peer reviewer. Over time, I have reviewed more than 140 manuscripts for journals in political science, international relations, and research methods, including the American Political Science Review, European Journal of International Relations, International Studies Quarterly, Contemporary Security Policy, Sociological Methods & Research, Quality & Quantity, and Field Methods (a verified record is maintained on my Web of Science reviewer profile). In addition, I have reviewed book manuscripts for Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, and other academic publishers, and I have reviewed grant proposals for the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO), and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), among other research foundations.
